How To: DIY China Cabinet Makeover With Chalk Paint

Have you ever considered painting a piece of furniture? Have you ever wondered if you can paint your furniture? Before donating or selling that old piece of furniture, consider painting it! I almost got rid of my “no longer loved” China cabinet until I had the idea of painting it. I wanted to keep it because it fit so nicely into our dining room wall niche, but the color just didn’t go with our new home. I was intimidated at first, since I had never painted a piece of furniture before. I had no clue where to start.

I did some research and decided to use chalk paint on my cabinet. I chose to use Behr chalk paint, in the color Ottertail. I did not sand or strip my furniture prior to painting. I applied two coats of chalk paint using a chalk paint brush, letting each coat completely dry before applying the next. After the last coat of paint dried completely, I applied a coat of chalk paint wax to give it a finished look. Behr currently makes three variations of chalk wax. I decided to use the White wax.

I also added gold leaf paint using a small paint brush to the decorative areas of the cabinet for extra detail. I initially had planned on switching the cabinet hardware, but decided to paint it instead. I also used the chalk paint and wax for this area.

After the cabinet was fully painted, I added some non-traditional decorative pieces inside of the cabinet. I removed one glass shelf to accommodate a taller sized vase and stems.

I absolutely love the way that it turned out. Have you ever painted a piece of furniture? If not, would you try it?
